Terrific! About 27 Persons Die In Italy Apulia Train Crash Near Bari

Dozens of rescue workers in southern Italy are still searching the wreckage of a head-on train collision which killed at least 27 people on Tuesday. It is still unclear what caused the crash, which happened on a remote single-track line north of Bari.

However, one of the trains' black boxes has been recovered at the scene. Cranes and heavy lifting equipment worked through the night to clear the wreckage of the two trains which crashed at high speed.

Fifteen people are being treated in hospital for their injuries, and some of them remain in a critical condition.
The army is helping the operation near the town of Andria in the southern region of Apulia.
Italian PM Matteo Renzi visited the site on Tuesday and promised a full investigation. He described the death toll as unacceptable.

At the moment, "human error" remains the privileged line of inquiry, reports La Repubblica newspaper.
The collision took place in good weather at 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT) as the trains travelled between the towns of Bari and Barletta, in the southern region of Apulia.
Both trains had four carriages, and some were so badly damaged by the crash that there was little left but debris.

Rescue teams have been piling up the twisted metal on to a scrap heap that gives some idea of the force involved in the impact, reports the BBC's Dan Johnson at the scene.

Occasionally workers discover another body, he says. Local officials said it was difficult to say how many people were on board the train at the time as there was no list.

Officials were due to begin identifying the bodies in Bari on Wednesday morning.
