Mixed reaction as U.S. court’s approve same-sex marriage

TWO legal luminaries, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and Chief Mike Ahamba(SAN) have condemned the recent verdict by the United States (US) Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage.

In a 5-4 ruling, the highest court in the US said the Constitution requires all 50 states to carry out and recognize marriage between people of the same sex last Friday.

In the ruling, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that the plaintiffs asked “for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
The US apex court’s ruling thus brings to an end more than a decade of bitter legal battles.

Olanipekun said the decision was contrary to God’s ordination as well as the principles that ushered in the American state in 1776.

His words: “That decision runs contrary to God’s ordination. Its also contrary to what the Americans claim to be when the American State was founded in 1776.

“The American nation is moving too fast away from the principles that ushered in the American nation in 1776 when they were fighting the British colonial masters. When you read the American constitution, the preamble and the declaration, they were talking about God, God and God.

“The American nation was founded on the Supremacy of God and the need for all human created by Him to obey his laws and respect to man. So one is very surprised the way it is now turning 360 degrees away.
In his reaction, Ahamba said the ruling was only based on the interpretation of the American law and could not be universal.

According to him, “it is an internal affair and it is an unfortunate situation.”

He therefore expressed gratitude that there is nothing in Nigerian law that could make any court in the country interprete the same as American Supreme court has interpreted in their own law.

He said: “Today, I thank God that I am not an American, where a man can marry a man and a woman can marry a woman.
